Set in 19th-century California, Zorro tells the story of Don Diego Vega, the son of Los Angeles’ benevolent alclade, or mayor, who returns from I stay in Europe to discover this father has been removed from office. The new alclade is greedy scoundrel who has conspired with the evil Captain Esteban Pasquale (Basil Rathbone) to rob the citizenry blind through outrageous taxes.

Trained as an expert swordsman in Europe, Don Diego decides to fight back against the city’s oppressors. Posing as a helpless fop to avoid suspicion, he plans his attacks, dawns mask and cape, and transforms himself into the fearless Zorro. In this disguise, he openly defies the alclade’s laws, challenges the captains authority, and leaves his mark the letter “Z”, carved with his sword wherever he goes. He also woos the alclade’s nice, the beautiful Lolita (Linda Darnell), all the while keeping both the authorities in his own family in the dark as to his true identity – from back cover.
